The Original Warm Fuzzy Tale
A beloved parable about how freely giving and receiving warmth transforms communities, illustrating the TA concept of strokes through a simple and powerful story.
Written for: Children, parents, educators, and anyone interested in the concept of strokes
The Original Warm Fuzzy Tale is perhaps Steiner’s most widely known work, though many who have encountered it may not realise its roots in Transactional Analysis. The story uses the metaphor of “warm fuzzies” and “cold pricklies” to illustrate how the free exchange of positive recognition, what TA calls strokes, sustains human wellbeing, and how scarcity thinking poisons communities.
Originally written as a therapeutic parable, the tale has been used in classrooms, workshops, and therapy groups around the world. Its simplicity is deceptive; beneath the surface lies a sharp critique of the social and economic forces that teach people to hoard affection and withhold kindness.
First published by Jalmar Press in 1977 and reprinted in 2024 by Doohan Family Medicine Consultants, the book continues to find new readers across generations. It remains a gentle but potent introduction to one of Steiner’s central convictions: that love and recognition are abundant resources, and that treating them as scarce does profound harm.
